B.Y.O. PJs

Adults wearing pajamas outdoors is a trend I find odd. Are these people too lazy to remove their funky jammies and pull on a pair of pants? Yeesh! Kids, however, get a pass. Raise your hand if you remember piling into the family car as a young ‘un and heading to the drive-in to see a double feature in your PJs. OK, dinosaurs, put your hands down now, and go explain what a drive-in is to the whippersnappers who have never visited one.

It may be difficult to find a drive-in these days, but I’ve got a great event that your kids can enjoy in their pajamas. It’s the fourth annual Storytelling and Pajama Party hosted by Hotel Commonwealth on February 22 and 23. For a suggested $20 donation per family (which will be matched by the hotel) to support the children literacy organization, ReadBoston, PJ-clad attendees will be regaled by professional storytellers, can add all the fixings they want at the make-your-own hot chocolate bar, and have an opportunity to meet Curious George. (Fun Boston-area fact: Curious George authors H. A. and Margret Rey lived in Cambridge.)

If you want to make a weekend adventure out of the event, the hotel (which is fabulous) is offering a Bedtime Stories Package at a special rate that includes admission to the party, accommodations in a four-person suite, a backpack for the kiddos stuffed with L.L. Bean slippers and other goodies, a morning pancake making class, and complimentary parking.

If you do plan to splurge for the package, do me a favor: Don’t wear your pajamas out on the streets of Boston the following day. That’s just gross.
